3 Tips to Tune into Your Inner Authority in Human Design

Your Inner Authority is the way you make decisions according to your unique Human Design chart. Your individual power aligns when you use your Strategy and Authority within your Energy Type. Everything you desire also desires you—you just need to meet on the same plane for it to happen.

If you already know your Inner Authority and understand what it’s for, you might still feel a bit lost. After all, we’re all taught to make decisions with time, a cool head, and by weighing all the pros and cons. But the truth is, the vast majority of us weren’t designed to make decisions that way. Our body has its own internal system to guide our decision-making, but like any machine, if it’s not used regularly, it stops functioning properly.

So, before we dive into what fine-tunes each Authority specifically, it’s important to note that the best way to sharpen your Authority is by actually using it. Start with small decisions: what to eat, what to wear, where to go… The more you connect with your Authority, the more clearly you’ll feel its power. If you already feel ready to commit to yourself in this way, here are some tips to help fine-tune your own Inner Authority.

EMOTIONAL AUTHORITY

1. Keep a journal of everything you’re feeling.

This practice helps you observe your emotions and release them onto paper. Over time, you’ll start to identify patterns that will help you recognize your emotional waves.

Learn the art of patience—plant now and harvest later. Not everything happens immediately, and your Emotional Clarity comes with time.

3. Practice yoga.

Moving your body in a controlled way, aligned with your breath, cultivates calm and self-control, giving you the chance to observe everything you’re feeling without judgment.

1. Dance to the rhythm of your body.

No choreography. Just play music and let your body move. Listen to the music and let yourself flow.

2. Play the “This or That” game.

Find a friend—preferably another Sacral Authority—and ask each other binary questions. “Beer or wine?”, “Winter or summer?” The Sacral always knows what it wants. You can place your hand over your belly button to feel the power of your response.

At first, it may feel forced or like an odd way of speaking—especially in Portuguese, where we often omit this pronoun—but there is great power in beginning sentences with “I,” even when you’re referring to others.

2. Ask fewer questions and make more statements.

Instead of asking “Can you help me?”, say “I’d like you to help me.” Or instead of asking “Do you want some water?”, say “I can fill your glass with water if you’d like.” The idea is to connect with the feeling that what you want is your guide.

3. Say everything you think.

How many of us spend the day censoring our opinions and adjusting our speech to those around us? For someone with Ego Authority, this is the greatest betrayal. Likewise, having the courage to speak your mind even when you think it might be poorly received is what truly connects you to your Inner Authority. That voice you feel inside? It’s meant to be heard.

We all have “friends” — those people who no longer serve a meaningful purpose in our lives but still stick around. Thank them for the role they played in your life, but let them go. You need a healthy and supportive environment to make decisions.

3. Go running.

With so much openness in their Design, Environmental Authorities absorb a lot of external energy that they need to discharge. Running is the perfect exercise for this Authority because it places them alone, outdoors, and in touch with their individual rhythm. It can be as gentle or intense as needed, making it excellent for releasing tension and letting the mind process freely.

Everything around you influences you. Your home is your sacred space—don’t allow anything in it that doesn’t bring you peace or joy. Invest in the kind of decor that makes you happy.

Learn to follow the moon cycle with small rituals, such as writing a to-do list during the New Moon, saving more physical tasks for the Waxing Moon, and reserving calmer activities for the Waning Moon.

No matter what your Authority is, use it, respect it, and honor it. It’s a long journey to fully understand how your Authority shows up in you—it comes with time and practice. Along the way, there will be moments when you don’t follow your Authority due to outside pressure or conditioning. You’ll doubt it, and there will be times when you’ll criticize yourself for not listening to it even when it was so clear. In those moments, be gentle with yourself and forgive yourself. Your Authority never leaves you—it is yours and always within reach. It’s never too late to reconnect with it.
