As Albert Einstein once said, “Everything is Energy.” Energy is never lost, it can only be transformed, and energy is doing that constantly. As human beings, we carry great energetic power which we keep transforming throughout the day through energetic exchanges with the world around us. However, according to Human Design, the way that energy is organized within us varies based on the passage of neutrinos at the time of our birth.
THE CONCEPT OF ENERGY IN HUMAN DESIGN
Let us think of our energy, then, as the way our aura, or energetic field, presents itself. When we walk into a room full of people, how do others feel us? When we begin a project, what kind of energy do we imprint into it so that it develops? When we speak or move, what energetic force are we radiating? Energy Type is extremely important if we want to understand how we position ourselves in relation to others and to the Universe in general. Our Energy Type is something we are born with and it cannot be changed. It stays with us forever. That is why it is essential to know it and understand how it works, so that we do not become a mountain trying to behave like a river, attempting to go somewhere when its function is to remain solid and unmoving.
What defines our Energy Type is the definition of certain energetic centres within us and or the activation of certain channels between them. The way energy moves within us is the way it will move outwardly as well.
Knowing our Energy Type allows us to understand the most important key to our interaction with the world: our Strategy. Strategy is a kind of rule that defines how we are meant to act in relation to what appears in front of us and it helps us make the decisions that are correct for us. Trying to live without following our Strategy is like building a house without foundations.
If we think about the fact that we are all different and unique beings, it seems ridiculous to believe that there is only one solution for finding the path to happiness. If we drive different vehicles, we cannot believe that we will all reach the same destination by operating them in the same way. A car is not a boat, and a boat is not an airplane. How many times do we do everything the Guru, the Successful Person, the Priest, or the Self Help Book said and still do not manage to succeed?
Human Design is based on differentiation and understands that the flow of energy changes according to who we are. Following our Strategy, which derives from our Energy Type, allows us to align with our Purpose and therefore reduce the level of resistance we encounter. Our Energy Type is constantly calling us to behave in the way we are meant to, and when we do what we are supposed to be doing, life flows: we stop chasing what does not satisfy us, we find peace and success, and everything begins to make logical sense.
ENERGY TYPE
At present, the human being is made up of nine energetic centers distributed throughout the body. We all have these centers, whether they appear defined or not.
In the Human Design Chart, the centers are colored in, as are any gates or channels. None of this changes throughout life, having been partially configured around three months before birth and completed at the moment of birth. According to this configuration, our Energy Type is formed. Each center has a function and corresponds to certain physical and psychological characteristics. The way each center influences who we are depends on how it is configured and on the gates and channels it opens.
At present, there are five different Energy Types: the Generator, the Projector, the Manifestor, the Manifesting Generator, and the Reflector. Let us now look at their particular characteristics:
The Generator

The Generator is the most predominant Energy Type. It is estimated that Generators make up 37% of the population, and that is a good thing because Generators are the life force of the world. Generators were made to do and to build. They are the workforce and, without them, nothing would move beyond the realm of ideas. Their aura is attractive and enveloping, especially when Generators are satisfied.
To be a Generator, it is necessary to have the Sacral center defined, and for it not to be connected to the Throat through a direct or indirect channel.
A Generator’s Strategy is to Wait to Respond, since that response is obtained through the Sacral. The Sacral Center is a powerful energy center that responds almost immediately to simple questions. Generators are in their natural state when they can respond with a simple yes or no, which sometimes is no more than a nod of the head or a guttural sound like “Mmm-hmmm.” For that reason, Generators are not, by nature, designed to start something from zero that is completely original and innovative, unless it comes as a response to someone’s request or need.
Our current culture promotes competition, pushing, striving for more, and that kind of attitude goes against the nature of most of the population, the Generators, who need to respond rather than chase. For this reason, many valuable Generators in this world are in burnout, exhausted from trying to innovate where they have no space and from accepting opportunities that go against their immediate sacral response. When a Generator lives according to their Human Design, they feel satisfaction. If they live against their Design, they will encounter a great deal of frustration.
The Manifesting Generator

The Manifesting Generator is the second most common Energy Type, representing 33% of the population. It is similar to the Generator because its most powerful energy center is also the Sacral. However, Manifesting Generators have their Sacral center connected directly or indirectly to the Throat, which gives them a second energetic power similar to that of Manifestors.
The Manifesting Generator carries powerful and almost inexhaustible energy. They are characterized by their ability to do a thousand things at once and by an incredible talent for finding the fastest way to reach the final destination.
Although they have some Manifestor characteristics, Manifesting Generators differ from them because their Strategy is the same as that of Generators: Wait to Respond. A Manifesting Generator only acquires the power to initiate something when doing so in response to a request. For a Manifesting Generator, who loves staying busy with many activities and has countless ideas, having to wait before beginning can be very frustrating. When a Manifesting Generator lives aligned with their Energy, they experience satisfaction.
The Manifestor

Manifestors were placed in this world to initiate. They are the ones who hold the power to begin projects and may even do so alone. Manifestors are the Energy Type that best fits the current cultural pattern of “making things happen,” but they make up only 9% of the population.
A Manifestor has the Throat center defined and connected directly or indirectly to the Heart center, the Solar Plexus, or the Root, and they can never have the Sacral center defined.
The Manifestor’s aura, by its deeply individual nature, is repelling. Because of their powerful energetic position, Manifestors are often misunderstood as someone to be feared. This happens because when Manifestors do not live according to their Strategy, which is to Inform and Then Initiate, they begin to feel anger instead of the peace they were designed to feel when the mission they set out to accomplish has been fulfilled.
The Projector

A Projector is a human being who does not have the Sacral defined, nor the Throat connected to a motor center, but who does have at least one other defined center. Projectors make up 20% of the current population and came into the world to lead, guide, and manage others. However, in order to fully express their remarkable leadership abilities, Projectors need to be invited. The Strategy of the Projector is to Wait for the Invitation, which often comes through the recognition they receive from others.
When a Projector does not have the chance to demonstrate their ability to guide others and optimize everything around them, they feel an intense inner bitterness. By understanding their Energy Type and their Strategy, a Projector can see that they should only use their abilities where they are requested, and that trying to impose them on those who do not want or recognize them is a mistake that will only wound the sensitivity they were given. A Projector’s aura is focused and penetrating.
The Reflector
Reflectors are very special beings. Because they have no defined centers, they are extremely intuitive and empathetic. They are people who are completely open to the world and to others, with a great capacity to feel the movements of humanity as a whole. They not only amplify but also reflect the world around them. A Reflector’s aura is resistant, as it only allows itself to be influenced up to a certain point.
Only 1% of the population has this Energy Type, and their Strategy is to Wait a Lunar Cycle. If a Reflector needs to make a decision, begin a project, or enter into a relationship, they need 29 days to let the idea mature or to find an answer, so that it comes genuinely from within and is not merely a reflection of what surrounds them. When a Reflector does not wait through a lunar cycle, they often feel disappointed or let down. On the other hand, when a Reflector follows their Strategy and gives themselves this long period of reflection, they always end up surprising themselves.
THE IMPORTANCE OF KNOWING OUR ENERGY TYPE
Knowing our Energy Type and, consequently, our Strategy is the first step within the Human Design experiment. Simply knowing our true energetic positioning in the world allows us to live with greater ease and freedom and to reduce the resistance we encounter in life.
At times, it is normal to feel some dissonance when we first discover our Energy Type. Revolt and confusion may even arise. After all, it is extremely difficult for a Projector, for example, to realize that their movements are limited until an invitation appears. However, after some time, we begin to understand that we have really spent so long fighting against what we were made to do that we start to feel ready to accept and align with who we truly are at our core. Each of us has so much to offer and create in the Universe if we work with it rather than against it.
